Tufts University Street Intersection, Somerville, Massachusetts

A major pedestrian access area at Tufts University located at the intersection Packard Avenue and Professors Row in Somerville, MA. required a re-design and alignment due to the amount of vehicular traffic and the conflicts it imposed on the pedestrians. The objective was to provide safer pedestrian access walkways, wheelchair access, and slow vehicular traffic and at the same time provide an aesthetic design for the university. After developing many options a raised intersection was selected to accomplish all of Tufts University objectives. Eaglebrook designed a raised intersection and crosswalks to slow vehicular traffic and to provide a safer pedestrian travel path. The storm drain system was designed to collect stormwater runoff at the low points created by the raised interaction. Landscaping, material selections, travel paths, and sitting areas where designed by Landscape Architect Marc Mazzarelli Associates, LLC.
